About Africa Cup of Nations

Founded in 1957, the African Cup of Nations is the most prestigious international football tournament in Africa. It takes place every two years, usually in January. Apart from the hosts, countries qualify for the competition via qualification groups which are drawn at random. The tournament proper sees 24 teams compete in a group stage which is followed by knockout rounds until the final. Thirty-eight different nations have competed since its inception, with Egypt winning the most titles (7). The competition’s all-time leading goalscorer is Samuel Eto’o (18 goals).
