About Uzbekistan

In August 1991 Uzbekistan declared independence from the Soviet Union and so their own national team was born. Their first match took place a year later in the Central Asian Cup against Tajikistan. As an independent nation, Uzbekistan has not yet qualified for a World Cup finals, but their campaign for the 2006 edition in Germany was shrouded in controversy. They lost out to Bahrain in the final stage of Asian qualification, but three matches were played between the nations instead of the regulation two. The first fixture, a 1-0 win for Uzbekistan, was voided by Fifa following a mistake by Japanese referee, Toshimitsu Yoshida, and they went out on away goals from the subsequent two-legged affair. For the 2014 World Cup, Uzbekistan went out on penalties to Jordan in the final round of Asian qualifying. They have enjoyed more success on their own continent and finished fourth in the 2011 Asian Cup, whilst also winning the 1993 Asian Games. Server Djeparov has the most appearances for his country.
