Soccer in the USA has always faced an uphill struggle for popularity due to the preference for other sports such as American Football, Baseball, and Basketball, but they have been one of the regular attendees of World Cup tournaments over the years. In 1950 they caused one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history when they defeated England, the pioneers of association football, 1-0, with Joe Gaetjens netting the solitary goal of the match. A barren period followed as USA would not qualify for a World Cup again until 1990, but thereafter they would reach five consecutive tournaments. In 1994 they hosted the World Cup with much fanfare, which has been attributed to a spike in interest within the American public. They progressed through the group stage but lost in the round of sixteen to eventual champions Brazil. 2002 was another positive outing as they reached the quarter-finals only to be eliminated by Germany, who would go on to reach the final. They have never won a major tournament but have made a significant impact in the Confederations Cup, most notably in 2009 when they knocked out European champions, Spain, to reach the final. Again, however, Brazil would be their conquerors. They hosted the Copa America in 2016 and finished fourth – one of two fourth-placed finishes as special invitees to that tournament. But they are in a low moment after failing to qualify for World Cup 2018 from a notoriously straightforward Concacaf section. Cobi Jones has the most caps for the United States with 164, while Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan each hold the record for most goals, having netted 58 times.
