The United Arab Emirates declared independence from the United Kingdom in 1971, and played their first official international football match in 1972. They took on Qatar, and won the match 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ahmed Chowbi. The UAE qualified for their first World Cup in 1990 in Italy, but suffered from coaching drama before they took to the pitch. Carlos Alberto Parreira was previously in charge and was succeeded by his Brazilian compatriot, Mario Zagallo, who was the coach to lead the team to their first World Cup. However, before the tournament he was replaced by his predecessor, Parreira. It proved to be a baptism of fire for the country on the world stage, as they lost all of their group matches against West Germany, Colombia, and Yugoslavia. Their first goal of the World Cup was scored by Khalid Ismail against the Germans in a 5-1 loss. They have enjoyed the most success in the Arabian Gulf Cup, which they have won on two occasions in 2007 and 2013. In the Asian Cup, their best result came in 1996 when they finished as runners-up to Saudi Arabia. Adnan Al Talyani is the record appearance-maker for his nation, having earned a remarkable 161 caps.
