About Sweden

The Swedish national team made their first appearance at a World Cup in the second edition of the tournament back in 1934, and have gone on to qualify 11 more times, whilst also featuring in six European Championships. The late 1940s was the golden age for the Sweden team; a gold medal in the 1948 Olympic Games was followed by a third-place finish in the 1950 World Cup, but it was their performance in the 1958 version of the tournament which harbours both happy and painful memories for the Swedes. As tournament hosts Sweden made it all the way to the final, energised by the support from the stands but they were outclassed in the final by Brazil, with the Selecao fielding an unknown 17-year-old by the name of Pele, who scored two vital goals claim Brazil's first World Cup triumph. A barren period followed, but a return to prominence occurred in the 1990s as Sweden reached the semi-finals of Euro 92 and finished third in USA 1994, with the latter tournament putting the legendary Henrik Larsson on the map. Their top goalscorer is the incomparable Zlatan Ibrahimovic and their most capped player is Anders Svensson with 148 – the sixth-highest of any player in Europe. The most prestigious domestic team in Sweden top division, the Allsvenskan, is Malmo, after IFK Goteborg enjoyed a period of European success in the mid-1990s.
