About Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Arabia football federation was established in 1956, but it would take nearly 30 years before the Falcons would take part in their first international tournament when they qualified for the Asian Cup in 1984. In 1994, Saudi Arabia reached their first World Cup tournament in the USA, and it would be their best performance as they made it out of the group stage. In a group alongside Netherlands, Belgium and Morocco, they finished second with Fuad Anwar scoring two goals on the route to the second round, when they were eliminated by Sweden. Saeed Owairan scored one of the greatest goals in World Cup history in the 1-0 win over Belgium, running the full length of the pitch before firing home. They qualified for the next three World Cup editions, but could not better their 1994 performance. They have enjoyed more success in the Asian Cup and have emerged as champions in 1984, 1988, and 1996. Mohamed Al-Deayea is the highest appearance-maker for Saudi Arabia and has the most official caps of any goalkeeper in international football history. Majed Abdullah has scored the most goals for his nation.
