About Peru

The heydey for the Peru national team was unquestionably during the 1970s. A superbly-organised side managed by the Brazilian World Cup winner Didi were one of the highlights of the 1970 tournament in Mexico. Their star player was Teofilo Cubillas who scored in every match up until the quarter-final exit to Brazil, while in 1978 the skilful South Americans embarrassed a Scotland team expected to perform well, qualifying for the second round in the process, though their controversial defeat to an Argentina team who required a four-goal victory for progress, 6-0, prompted claims of conspiracy. After reaching the 1982 tournament Peru haven't competed since, though they will return for Russia in 2018, thanks to a superb team ethic from players coming largely from domestic and South American football. Their local league is the Primera Division, with Universitario the most successful side in the tournament's history.
