Like a moth to the flame, some players just can't help themselves when it comes to flying into a tackle.

And, in the modern game, players can be punished by the referee for a number of different reasons including poor tackles, persistent fouling, a tug of the shirt, taking their own shirt off after scoring and, of course, dissent.

When taking into account every league in Europe, the player who received the most yellow cards in 2023/24 was Bari's Valerio De Cesare who picked up an astounding 18 bookings.

He played 31 games in Serie B, so that works out at around 0.63 yellow cards per match - he is was more likely to be booked than not in every game!

In at number two is another player outwith the top five leagues - George Thomas of Bolton Wanderers, who received 17 bookings.

Worst discipline in Europe's top five leagues in 2023/24

Within the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1, the player with the worst discipline and who received the most bookings was Cadiz's Ivan Alejo. Remarkably, he wasn't sent off in the league this season, which means he received a booking in 17 different matches.

There's another Cadiz player in the top 10 - Ruben Alcaraz - who received 13.

Serie A had two players who earned 15 bookings - Luca Ranieri of Fiorentina and Leandro Paredes of Roma.

For the Premier League, the unlucky representatives are Joao Palhinha (13), Marcos Senesi (12) and Douglas Luiz (11).

Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga had no players who received more than 11 yellow cards.
