Zinedine Zidane has insisted he wants Lionel Messi to stay at Barcelona, as he wants the best players in the world to be in Spain.

Following a series of disappointing results for the Blaugrana, and reported dressing room unrest between the squad and head coach Quique Setien, rumours have started circling that Messi may finally be ready to move on.

During the draw against Celta, Messi was apparently seen ignoring the instructions of assistant coach Eder Sarabia.

Barcelona would then draw again against Atletico, allowing Real Madrid the opportunity to move four points clear at the top of La Liga, which they took on Thursday after defeating Getafe 1-0.

It is this run of form and the prospect of surrendering the title to Madrid which has left Messi disillusioned, according to Cadena SER.

For Madrid head coach, Zidane, though, he hopes that Messi remains with Barca.

Zidane said: "I don't know what will happen but we hope not because he is in this league and we want the best in this league,.

Messi has once again been Barcelona’s star performer this season, scoring 22 goals and assisting a further 17 in the league to earn a 99 FC Rating.
