Fulham's trip to Tottenham Hotspur has been called off after the visitors reported a number of new Covid-19 cases.

The two clubs were set to contest a Premier League fixture at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday evening.

However, a fresh outbreak of coronavirus cases among the Fulham squad has forced a postponement.

The move was confirmed at a Premier League Board meeting held just hours before the scheduled 6pm kick-off time.

A statement read: "The match between Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham, due to be played at 18:00 GMT this evening, has been postponed following a Premier League Board meeting this afternoon.

"Fulham lodged a request with the Premier League Board to rearrange the fixture following a significant rise in positive COVID-19 cases, as well as a number of players showing symptoms today.

"The Premier League Board has consulted its medical advisors and the decision to postpone the game has been taken as a precaution and with the health of players and staff as the priority. The group will now be retested immediately.

"With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its COVID-19 protocols and being able to continue to play our fixtures as scheduled.

"The League wishes those with COVID-19 a safe and speedy recovery and will rearrange the postponed fixture between Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham in due course."

Wednesday's fixture is the second this week to fall foul of Covid-19 after Manchester City's visit to Everton on Monday was also called off.

Pep Guardiola's squad were hit by an unconfirmed number of cases ahead of the game having already revealed that Gabriel Jesus and Kyle Walker had recently tested positive.

Fulham boss Scott Parker was expected to return to the dugout at Spurs after missing the Boxing Day draw with Southampton.

The former England international was forced to self-isolate when a member of his household returned a positive test.
