Thomas Tuchel's decision to omit first-leg goalscorer Olivier Giroud raised some eyebrows pre-match, particularly as Timo Werner instead returned to the starting XI after also missing Saturday's visit to Leeds United.
But the German put in performance that more than justified his manager's call - take a closer look below.
⚽ ⏱️ 34’ Werner blocks a cross just outside the Chelsea box before springing up the pitch to lay on a simple finish for Hakim Ziyech at the back post.
As well as setting up the opener, Werner went on to take three shots himself, take nine touches in the box, and consistently turn the Atletico defence with his pace and movement.
〽️ Timo Werner: Rating Week-on-Week
Werner earned a 5.6 FC Rating from an ineffective 21-minute cameo off the bench against Leeds but was much-improved here. The forward's assist, constant threat and workrate against Atletico ensured he deservedly came away with a 7.3 FC Rating

Timo Werner: What Next?
It remains to be seen whether Werner's 83rd-minute withdrawal here was with one eye on the weekend's FA Cup clash with Sheffield United.
But the 25-year-old is certainly worthy of keeping his spot for that tie after seizing his latest opportunity with both hands.
