Ronaldo and Fernandes: 13 shots, no goals as Portugal beat Azerbaijan

Portugal's two most influential players saw plenty of the ball in Turin but weren't able to do much with it as they claimed a nervy win.

Portugal got their World Cup qualifying campaign off to a winning start against Azerbaijan despite Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes failing to fire.

The pair took an incredible 13 shots between them across 90 minutes in Turin, but neither managed to find the back of the net as Fernando Santos' men claimed a 1-0 victory.

In fact, the only goal came when Azerbaijan defender Maksim Medvedev put through his own net with 37 minutes gone.

Portugal travel to face Serbia, who beat the Repulic of Ireland on Wednesday, for their next qualifying fixture this weekend.

Ronaldo and Fernandes will hope to find their shooting boots before then after a profligate performance at Juventus' home ground.
