What transfer business will PSG conduct this summer?

Given a crazy summer of action, how is the Paris club's business shaping up?

At the moment there seems to be more talk of players potentially (and officially) leaving PSG rather than coming in.

And while the Ligue 1 season might have ground to a premature halt in a move that is widely being condemned in France as an embarrassment, clubs are already starting to prepare for the 2020-21 season, due to begin on the weekend of 23 August.

There are still various battles being fought to revive the 2019-20 campaign; Lyon, for instance, are campaigning for a playoff that would allow them to fight for a place in the Champions League having ‘finished’ seventh.

PSG meanwhile are reportedly seeking to bring the start date of the new season closer to allow them to play friendly matches ahead of their European quarter-final,

And the domestic transfer window reopened on Monday, giving clubs the closest taste of normality they have enjoyed since mid-March.

The coronavirus pandemic will, however, make itself felt in the very fabric of the transfer window, with uncertainty over the financial impact the virus will have on the game.

The summer market is, therefore, perhaps the most unusual and least predictable since this format for player trading was introduced in 2002.

But how is PSG's potential business shaping up?

PSG & Mbappe's contract stand-off

If there is a debate to be had over whether Neymar or Kylian Mbappe is PSG’s best player – both finished the season with a Football Critic rating of 99 – there is little doubt that the Parisians ideally see the Frenchman as their long-term future.

The Parc des Princes club, however, have a fight on their hands to retain the services of the 21-year-old, whose contract expires in 2022, giving his hometown side a major headache. Failure to renew his deal in the coming months may force their hand into selling him for a relatively cheap price in 12 months or face the prospect of losing him for nothing.

“I came here at 18. I was a talent but I was not a superstar. Now I’m a superstar,” he told the BBC in January, clearly aware of his value to the club both on and off the field.

Liverpool have been linked with a potential future move, with Mbappe doing little to quell the speculation, while the player holds a long-term love of Real Madrid and Zinedine Zidane.

Thiago Silva needs replaced

No truly great summer signings are expected in Paris, although Thiago Silva will need to be replaced in the heart of the defence, but perhaps the best business they could do would be to secure the long-term future of a player many expect to one day win the Ballon d’Or.

Neymar going nowhere

Meanwhile, despite persistent rumours in the Spanish press linking Neymar with a return to La Liga either with Barcelona or Real Madrid, the Brazilian’s future looks certain to be in Paris for at least another year.

Barcelona's financial situation means they will likely need to offload Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho or potentially both before bringing anyone else in, while a move to Madrid just doesn't look viable for him at the moment.
