Memphis Depay sends Lyon top in impressive Barcelona audition

Netherlands international Memphis Depay continues to be linked with a summer transfer to Barcelona - and he is catching the eye with Lyon.

Memphis Depay is a free agent in July and the Lyon star continues to audition for future clubs in a promising manner as he played a starring role in OL’s 3-2 win over Brest.

A long-time target of Barcelona, the Netherlands star grabbed a goal and an assist as Lyon moved to the summit of Ligue 1, albeit with the caveat that both Lille and Paris Saint-Germain can overtake them on Sunday.

Nevertheless, Rudi Garcia’s men put the pressure on their rivals with a hard-fought win in Brittany.

Lyon were under pressure early from Brest but took the lead when Lucas Paqueta pressed home goalkeeper Sebastien Cibois into a dreadful error in possession to open the scoring.

A ⏱️ 23’ Lyon’s high press catches Brest out again, this time 30 yards from their own goal. Memphis seizes the ball and rolls a pass to Aouar, who fires the second goal.

⏱️ 44’ Shortly before half-time, Lyon break with pace. Memphis beats the offside traps and Cibois to the ball. The goalkeeper’s lunge pulls down the Netherlands international, who dispatches a fine penalty into the corner as a consequence. It proves the match-winning goal.

Memphis Depay: What Next?

Lyon play Marseille in Ligue 1 next weekend as they attempt to continue their title challenge. It promises to be a pivotal week as OL will also face Rennes four days later. Come through those two matches unscathed and they will have to be seen a genuine contenders to upset PSG’s dominance.

Memphis, of course, will be vital in both.
