Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been publicly backed by Manchester United executive Ed Woodward, who says the club are "absolutely committed" to the Norwegian's tenure as manager.

The Norwegian took over from Jose Mourinho as permanent manager last year, and although he managed to guide the team to a third-place finish in 2019/20, the Red Devils have made a poor start to the new campaign.

After the opening seven matches of the 2020/21 season, they are down in 14th, having lost three of those fixtures.

Things reached a new low for United at the start of October when they were embarrassed 6-1 at home by Tottenham, now coached by Mourinho.

It is a case of one step forward, two steps back for the Old Trafford side, as although they bounced back from that loss with three wins from four, they would go on to lose at home versus Arsenal and then against Champions League minnows Basaksehir.

The manner of the defeat in Turkey was particularly alarming, as it featured some of the worst defending you'll see this campaign.

Woodward has continually backed Solskjaer throughout his reign, and has done so again as Man Utd released their quarterly financial figures.

“On the pitch, while there is still hard work ahead to achieve greater consistency, we remain absolutely committed to the positive path we are on under Ole as the team continues to develop," Woodward said in a released club statement.

"We miss playing in front of our fans and we are working hard together with our governing bodies and relevant authorities to ensure that fans can safely return as soon as possible.”

The statement from United comes just a week after rumours circulated that the club had already contacted former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino about coming in as his replacement.
