Real Madrid moved eight points clear of second place and a massive 16 points clear of Barcelona on Saturday evening, following a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad.

An opening goal from in-form forward Vinicius Jr early in the second half was then added to 10 minutes later when Casemiro set up Luka Jovic with a fine header to bag a second goal and all three points.

Madrid’s performance would have undoubtedly been buoyed by Barcelona’s defeat to Real Betis earlier in the day, when a single goal from Juanmi 10 minutes from time proved more than enough to down the Catalan giants in front of their own fans.

A similar fate awaited fellow title challengers, Atletico Madrid, who were also forced to concede defeat, when late goals from Franco Russo and Takefusa Kubo overcame an earlier goal from Matheus Cunha to give Mallorca a famous victory in the Spanish capital.

Elsewhere, Sevilla kept the pressure on Madrid with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Villarreal, while Granada picked up an important three points against Alaves in the Friday night game.
