In one of the most remarkable penalty shootouts in recent memory, Milan eventually squeezed through to the Europa League group stage at the expense of Rio Ave, who had no less than four spotkicks that, if scored, would have seen them progress.

The Rossoneri will be hoping to take some of that good fortune into the league this weekend when they take on Spezia at the San Siro.

Milan have been solid in the opening two matches of the 2020/21 Serie A season, defeating Bologna and then Crotone 2-0, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring two in the first round.

The big Swede tested positive for coronavirus last week and it is unlikely he will feature versus Spezia due to not training with the team since.

Ante Rebic and Matteo Musacchio are certain absentees but could be available after the international break.

Alessio Romagnoli is a doubt, too.

18-year-old Daniel Maldini started the Europa League match in the centre-forward role against Rio Ave, and although he struggled to impose himself out of position up top, Milan don't really have another option for the match against Spezia.
