Ander Herrera claims Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Edinson Cavani wants to move to Spain after the Uruguayan failed to agree terms on a new deal with the French club.

Cavani has been with the recently-crowned champions of Ligue 1 for seven seasons after moving from Napoli in 2013 and is the club’s highest goalscorer of all time, netting 200 times for the Parisiens.

However, injury problems and the arrival of Mauro Icardi in the 2019/20 season saw him make just seven Ligue 1 appearances.

In January, it was widely expected he would indeed make the move to Spain, with Atletico Madrid the most likely destination, but when that transfer fell through he stayed in Paris.

But with no improved contract on the table, Herrera has fuelled speculation by revealing that Cavani regularly asks him what it is like playing in La Liga.

“I know Cavani wants to play in Spain. He loves the league and the country, he asks me about it a lot,” the former Manchester United midfielder told AS.

“However, since we left Paris I’ve not spoken to him about his situation.”

Even though Icardi has only been on loan this season, PSG recently made his move from Inter permanent in a deal worth €60m meaning that Cavani’s playing time could be further restricted next season.

The Spaniard also commented on that piece of business to AS, saying it was encouraging for the club to retain such a prolific goalscorer.

"This is great news for the club, which ensures a top three striker for the next six or seven years as he is still very young,” he added.

“He [Icardi] has scored goals, he adapted very quickly and inside the area he is a beast and outside of it, very practical and intelligent, because he knows what his virtues and limitations are."

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Ligue 1 was finished prematurely with PSG being named champions due to their 12-point lead with a game in hand.
