The pressure was on Paris Saint-Germain and head coach Thomas Tuchel prior to Saturday’s 3-0 win over Rennes, in which Angel Di Maria played a major role.

PSG profited from a bad error from Rennes goalkeeper Alfred Gomis as they took the lead through Moise Kean, but moments later Di Maria sounded a further warning to the visitors as he cracked a shot off the post from range.

⏱️ 21' With quarter of the game gone, Di Maria gave PSG a stranglehold on proceedings. Latching onto a pass from Ander Herrera down the left channel, he lofted a delicate shot over Gomis and into the net.

⏱️ 73' PSG were shaking a little in the second half, but Di Maria’s second of the evening put the game to bed. He took aim from well outside the box, with his shot taking a nick of Damien Da Silva that sent the ball spinning awkwardly into the net.

It was a performance in which Di Maria was the individual inspiration that PSG so often need.

It has been a relatively low-key season for Di Maria thus far, reduced to Champions League games in recent weeks due to a four-match domestic ban. He has not been at his peak in Europe, with his best display coming against RB Leipzig on Wednesday in a 2-1 loss. During that match he missed a penalty but still got an FC Rating of 7.5.

Against Rennes, however, he hit an FC Rating of 9.4.
