Manchester United were excited when they completed the capture of 18-year-old winger Amad Diallo, and he went some way to justifying that as he scored the opener in a 1-1 Europa League last-16 first-leg draw with Milan.

On an evening upon which Man Utd often struggled to get going, surviving two disallowed goals in the first half, former Atalanta player Diallo came off the bench to snatch the first goal. Late on, Simon Kjaer cancelled it out with a header from a corner.

It was Diallo’s first senior goal – and it was achieved in just his third appearances.

Here’s how a memorable night went…

📷 Amad Diallo: Match Snapshot

⏱️ HT Manchester United had toiled for offensive inspiration in the first half and reacted by taking off the limping Anthony Martial and introducing Diallo.

⏱️ 50' Bruno Fernandes gathers the ball with space in the centre of the field. Recognising the potentially of getting in behind, Diallo makes a diagonal burst from the right wing to latch onto the playmaker’s lofted pass forward. With Gianluigi Donnarumma caught in no-man’s land, Diallo lobs a header over the keeper and into the empty goal.

IMPROVEMENT

Diallo’s career is just getting going, and indeed this was just the third time he has played long enough to earn an FC Rating.

He has started positively, though, and this was his best outing to date as he scored a 7.2 FC Rating.

Diallo: What Next?

Manchester United have been keen to play down the prospect of rushing Diallo into their starting XI, although if he continues to make contributions such as this, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s hand will be forced.

Certainly, it is unlikely that he will feature from the beginning against West Ham on Sunday or even next week in Milan, but he has certainly put himself forward for longer stints from the bench.
