Mexico has a proud history within the game and is one of the more successful tournament teams since the 1990s. El Tri had the honour of being involved in the very first game in the history of the World Cup, against France in Uruguay in 1930. They have qualified for 16 World Cups and have not missed the tournament since 1994, making them one of only six teams to do so. Remarkably Mexico, Brazil and Germany are the only nations to make it out of the group stage in each of the last six World Cup competitions. Mexico are also the most successful country within the CONCACAF region and have won seven CONCACAF Gold Cups and three CONCACAF Championships. Mexico likes competing in front of their home fans, particularly in their impressive Estadio Azteca stadium, as they have reserved their best performances for tournaments which they have hosted – the 1970 and 1986 World Cups, in which they reached the last eight thanks to the talents of Real Madrid striker Hugo Sanchez, arguably their finest-ever product. Their all-time top goalscorer is Javier Hernandez, while Claudio Suarez has the most caps, and the third-most of any player ever, with 177. The biggest clubs in Mexico in their domestic league are America, Guadalajara, Tigres, Pachuca, Santos Laguna, and Toluca.
