No Benzema? - How Real Madrid could line up against Shakhtar Donetsk

Karim Benzema missed Los Blancos' trip to Elche at the weekend, and is a doubt for this crucial Champions League tie

Real Madrid host Shaktar Donetsk in the Champions League, but Carlo Ancelotti may not be able to call upon star man Karim Benzema.

The Frenchman suffered a foot injury against Sheriff Tiraspol, but still played against Barcelona and Osasuna. He was forced to miss Los Blancos' win over Elche at the weekend, but hopes to be back for this clash against the Ukrainian champions.

His absence would be even more sorely missed considering the fact that his replacement at the weekend, Mariano Diaz, broke his nose in the game and has since undergone surgery.

Rodrygo is likely to be another absentee after suffering a hamstring problem, while Gareth Bale, Dani Ceballos, and Fede Valverde are all still out.

Eden Hazard should get another chance from the start, but it seems his time at the club is coming to an end with his own injury issues becoming more and more of a problem. Marco Asensio is also in contention to take Rodrygo's place on the right flank.

Benzema is the real issue however, and the club will be desperate for him to start. Luka Jovic will be the man to take up the role through the middle if the Frenchman isn't fit.

How will Real Madrid line up?

Thibaut Courtois will start in goal, with the centre-back partnership of David Alaba and Eder Militao continuing in front of him.

At full-back, it's likely to be all change from the weekend, with Lucas Vazquez and Marcelo making way for Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy.

Carlo Ancelotti has reverted to experience in midfield recently, so Casemiro, Luka Modric, and Toni Kroos will play as the trio in the middle of the park.

Vinicius Junior has started the campaign on fire, and he will be deployed off the left, with Hazard on the right, and Benzema through the middle.

The Frenchman may have to be replaced later on, but he's so crucial to the way they play that he will be risked from the start.
