Lukaku back in the starting XI? - How Chelsea could line up against Watford

Romelu Lukaku hasn't started a game for Chelsea since his injury against Malmo in the Champions League, but he could be handed a start against Watford

Chelsea travel to Watford knowing that victory is essential if they want to keep their place at the top of the Premier League table.

The Blues were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester United last time out, despite having 66% possession, and 24 shots to their visitors' three, which allowed Manchester City and Liverpool to close the gap to the West London side.

Thomas Tuchel has been struck by injuries recently, with both Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner suffering problems in the home game against Malmo in the Champions League, while Ben Chilwell has suffered a suspected ACL injury that could keep him out until the beginning of next season.

However, Lukaku returned off the bench against Man Utd, and could well be leading the line against Watford as Chelsea hope to dispel the memories of the 4-1 defeat at Vicarage Road back in 2018.

Having beaten Man Utd by that same score-line just over a week ago, Watford are dangerous and the Blues will no doubt be wary of that.

Potential Chelsea Starting XI vs Watford

Edouard Mendy will be the chosen goalkeeper for the trip to Watford, but there may be changes in front of him.

Trevoh Chalobah has started three games in all competitions, so he may well find his run in the side ended, with Cesar Azpilicueta coming in for the first time since he started at wing-back away to Malmo. The Spaniard hasn't started a game at centre-back since the defeat to Man City in September, but with Chalobah and Thiago Silva likely to be rested, that spell could come to an end here.

Andreas Christensen will play in the middle of the back three, with Antonio Rudiger on the left.

With Chilwell out it will be Marcos Alonso who plays on the opposite flank to Reece James. Jorginho, who came third in the Ballon d'Or will be without N'Golo Kante or Mateo Kovacic next to him, and Tuchel may trust Saul Niguez to fill that role.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek did it against Man Utd, but the German coach could look to switch things up.

Mason Mount started on the bench against the Red Devils, so should be given a chance to impress from the start, while Callum Hudson-Odoi is in line to continue his eye-catching run of starts from the left-wing.

Lukaku will be the man leading the line, hoping to score for the first time since 14 September.
