Gerard Moreno set for key role - How Spain will line up against Sweden

The Villarreal star is likely to play a key role in a young squad that does not contain any Real Madrid players.

Gerard Moreno looks poised to play a key role for Spain at Euro 2020 as the former continental champions look to regain their crown from Portugal.

Winners of the tournament in 2008 and 2012, Spain are among the contenders to succeed although this squad has a different look to what they have fielded at past tournaments.

No players from Real Madrid are in the selection and Sergio Busquets - the only player with over 100 caps - will miss the first match after testing positive for coronavirus, a situation which heavily disrupted Spain's preparations.

The under-21 team had to step in and play a pre-tournament friendly against Lithuania as the whole senior squad isolated in the wake of Busquets' test result, while Diego Llorente had a false positive test but has since had two negatives.

In a young squad, Jordi Alba is the only other player with over 50 caps.

Spain will take on Sweden, Poland and Slovakia in a Group E line-up that may provide a test but still sees them listed as favourites to progress.

They start against Sweden in Seville on Monday and, as is often the case, Luis Enrique's team selection for Spain is difficult to predict.

What does seem clear is the importance of Moreno. He is an option to play in the centre of the front three or out wide, depending on whether Alvaro Morata - who scored three times at Euro 2016 - is selected.

Moreno scored 30 goals and added 12 assists in a stunning season for Villarreal which ended in Europa League glory and he now has the chance to make his mark for Spain on the big stage.

Man City prospect Ferran Torres is another likely starter, though Dani Olmo is pushing for a place in the team too.

Rodri should play in holding midfield with Busquets out, with much expected of Barcelona talent Pedri in his first major tournament. Koke and Marcos Llorente are also involved in a competitive battle for midfield places.

Without Sergio Ramos, it is a case of picking two from three at centre-back with newly eligible Aymeric Laprote, Pau Torres and Eric Garcia the options. Alba should be locked in at left-back with Cesar Azpilicueta hoping to play on the right, though Atletico Madrid star Llorente could fall back into that role.

Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simon could beat out David de Gea and Robert Sanchez for the number one spot after heavy debate in Spain over who should be preferred.
