De Bruyne and Hazard to make first start – How Belgium could line up against Finland

De Bruyne and Hazard both came off the bench against Denmark but could start Belgium’s final group game.

Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard could be poised to make their first starts of Euro 2020 in Belgium’s final game in Group B against Finland on Monday night.

The Red Devils are two wins from two in the group stages and have wrapped up second place in the group at the very least, with anything other than defeat against the Fins enough to secure top.

De Bruyne and Hazard both missed Belgium’s opener against Russia but came off the bench to play a big part in their comeback win over Denmark, with Hazard setting De Bruyne up to score the eventual winner.

Despite what would ordinarily be a lack of necessity, this match provides Belgium's two stars the perfect opportunity to build some match fitness heading into the knockout stages.

Italy’s team selection on Sunday against Wales with qualification sewn up could give an indication of how much Roberto Martinez is willing to rotate.

Thibaut Courtois should remain in goal, but Dedryck Boyata could come back in at centre half, along with Thomas Vermaelen, to form a back three with Jason Denayer, giving Toby Alerweireld and Jan Vertonghen a rest.

Timothy Castagne’s injury has depleted Martinez’s options at wing-back so Thomas Meunier will likely have to start on the right again, but Nacer Chadli could come in on the left to relieve Thorgan Hazard.

Dennis Praet could come into the midfield alongside Axel Witsel, also returning from injury, in place of Youri Tielemans and Leander Dendoncker.

That should leave De Bruyne to start in the right inside forward role that he played with such devastating effect against Denmark, with Hazard on the left side.

This will be a good opportunity to rest Romelu Lukaku, though the options in Belgium’s team are such than any number of players could come in to replace the Serie A MVP.

Leandro Trossard, Michy Batshuayi and young gun Jeremy Doku will all be eying a start, but after his best Premier League season in some time, Christian Benteke could be the man to lead the line.
