Mali have never reached a World Cup, playing their first ever qualifier for the tournament in 2000 but lost in the preliminary stage to Libya. They have enjoyed more success in the Africa Cup of Nations, and although they have never emerged as champions, they have made an impact on the competition over the years. Their best result came in 1972 when they finished as runners-up behind the People’s Republic of Congo, and thereafter have finished third on two occasions and fourth on three occasions. In recent times their participation in Fifa events has been subject to review due to government interference. Seydou Keita is the most legendary Malian player and has the most caps for his country as well as the most goals.
