About Israel

The Israel national football team are an anomaly in that in their history they have competed under three confederations – Asia, Oceania, and finally Europe, which they have been a member of since 1994. They have took part in one World Cup tournament in their history in 1970 in Mexico. They were drawn in a group alongside Italy, Uruguay, and Sweden, and although they finished bottom in the standings, they recorded admirable draws against Italy and Sweden, with their only World Cup goal being scored by Mordechai Spiegler in a 1-1 result against the Swedes. In the Asian Cup they were crowned champions in 1964, topping the group in their own country against India, South Korea, and Hong Kong. They have never qualified for the European Championship, but do hold a decent record of 21 wins in 48 qualifying matches. In domestic football, their most reputable clubs are Hapoel Be’er Sheva, Maccabi Tel-Aviv, and Maccabi Haifa. Yossi Benayoun has the most caps for his nation, while Spiegler has scored the most goals.
