The India national football team, despite having a population of well over a billion people, have a dismal international record, though this could be attributed to cricket being the national pastime. They have never officially qualified for a Fifa World Cup tournament, and although they could have featured in the 1950 edition of the tournament due to other nations withdrawing, they too opted to withdraw. The 1950s and early 1960s was the ‘golden era’ of the Indian national team as during this period they emerged as champions in the 1951 and 1962 Asian Games, whilst also finishing fourth in the 1956 Olympic Games. They have qualified for the Asian Cup on three occasions in 1964, 1984, and 2011, with their best finish coming in their first tournament when they ended their campaign as runners-up to Israel. Sunil Chhetri has the most appearances for his nation, whilst also scoring the most amount of goals.
