About Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands are the fourth smallest Uefa nation in terms of population. From the 1930s until 1988, they were not recognised as an official team by Fifa and only played matches against Iceland, Shetland, Orkney Islands, Greenland and Denmark U21s. They eventually gained entry to Fifa and their first official win was a 1-0 victory against Canada in a friendly. In their first competitive match, they pulled off one of the greatest modern football shocks when they defeated Austria 1-0 in a qualifier for the 1992 European Championship. They have not qualified for the World Cup or European Championship finals in their history, but including the Austria win they have achieved some stunning results; they secured, in terms of Fifa rankings, the greatest international upset ever when they (187th in the rankings) defeated Greece (18th in the rankings) in a qualifier for Euro 2016. Frodi Benjaminsen has the most appearances for his nation, while Rogvi Jacobsen has scored the most goals.
