Founded in 1960, the UEFA European Championships is the biggest international football tournament in Europe. It takes place every four years with a different venue from the previous host nation four years prior. Apart from the hosts, countries qualify for the competition via qualification groups which are drawn at random and take place over two years. The tournament proper sees 24 teams compete in a group stage which is followed by knockout rounds until the final. Thirty-three different countries have competed since its inception, with Germany and Spain winning the most titles (3). The competition’s all-time leading goalscorers are Michel Platini and Cristiano Ronaldo (9 goals).
