Marseille's fixture against Saint-Etienne this coming Friday has been postponed after three members of the former's first-team staff tested positive for coronavirus.

When the pandemic first hit a few months ago, Ligue 1 officials took the bold step to prematurely end the 2019/20 campaign with PSG named champions after 27 matches played.

Due to the lengthy layoff, they are the first elite league in Europe to return for the new season, with the rest not starting back until September.

A statement from Marseille confirmed the news.

"Olympique de Marseille has just learned that 3 new suspected cases of COVID-19 have been detected within its professional workforce," the statement read.

"If these cases are confirmed, they would bring the total number to 4 cases in the last 4 days.

"The club contacted the LFP commission planned for this purpose this evening."

Ligue have subsequently announced the cancellation of the match between Marseille and Saint-Etienne as the former still has “the virus is circulating within the club.”

The match between Nimes and Brest is also in doubt after Nimes confirmed two suspected cases within their ranks.

For Marseille, it has not been confirmed whether or not the impacted individuals are players or members of staff.
