The Netherlands are on the verge of appointing Frank de Boer as their new head coach on a deal until the summer of 2022, replacing Ronald Koeman, who left for Barcelona last month.

Koeman had helped to revitalise the fortunes of the Oranje after failing to qualify for Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018, helping to inject a new influx of youth players into the side.

But with his former club Barca in dire straits and Quique Setien fired after the Champions League loss to Bayern Munich, Koeman agreed to return to Camp Nou, leaving the Dutch needing a replacement.

And De Boer, who recently departed Atlanta Utd after a disappointing spell in MLS, following an extremely short stay at Crystal Palace, emerged as a leading candidate.

The KNVB are keen to have De Boer in place ahead of the upcoming International break in October and will unveil him either at the end of this week or the beginning of next, reports De Telegraaf.

De Boer, who won four Eredivisie titles in a row with Ajax from 2011 until 2014, was preferred to Frank Rijkaard, who chose to remain out of football, and Bayer Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz, who preferred to stay in club football for the time being.

De Boer's contract notably has a break point in 2022, with the World Cup being held in the wInter of that year in Qatar.
