The Belgian Jupiler Pro League has become the first top-flight competition in Europe to officially cancel the 2019/20 season.
Current leaders Club Brugge have been announced as champions, despite there being 11 games still to play.
In the league's convoluted system, the league is split into two after 30 games (currently 29 have been played), and points are weighted depending on team positions, which would mean Brugge's current 15-point lead would be reduced post-split. It is believed, however, that relegation is still to be decided.
The decision was taken in a unanimous vote by the Jupiler League's board of directors and will almost certainly be made official in a meeting on April 15.
The English Premier League is holding a crisis meeting on Friday 3 April to discuss next steps.
Yesterday's Uefa meeting which included representatives from all 55 member associations did not entertain the idea of cancelling competitions and indeed Uefa set an arbitrary date of 3 August by which domestic seasons should be completed.
But Belgium's decision has cast doubt on Uefa's view that there should be a continent-wide response to the situation, and time will tell how other leagues will choose to react.
