Barcelona's return to league action has been delayed after La Liga agreed to postpone their first league games to allow them a bigger post-season break.

Barcelona were competing in Europe until mid-August, when they were humbled 8-2 versus Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

As a result, the league have granted their request to postpone their first two rounds of fixtures; they were initially set to to begin at home to Elche, but that game will be rearranged.

Instead Ronald Koeman's first game in charge will be at home to Unai Emery's Villarreal on either 27 or 28 September, depending on the kick-off time arranged for TV.

Barcelona, along with Real Madrid, Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Getafe were given the opportunity to rearrange their opening rounds due to their participation in Europe over the summer. Elche, who were promoted via the Segunda Division play-offs, were offered the same terms.

Real Madrid's match with Getafe has also been delayed, while it is still to be established what will happen with Sevilla and Atletico, who were drawn to play one another on matchday one.
