For a population in excess of 80 million, it could be argued that Turkey is an underperforming European nation, though their record in recent years has improved considerably. They have qualified for three World Cup tournaments, in 1950, 1954, and 2002, and in 1954 failed to make it to the next round after being eliminated in a playoff by Brazil. They would have to wait nearly half a century before making it to the World Cup again, but South Korea and Japan was worth the wait. Turkey qualified from their group despite a loss against Brazil, while in the second round they became the pantomime villains after eliminating hosts Japan. A golden goal from Ilhan Mansiz was required in the quarter-final to best Senegal, and the semi-final paired them with Brazil once again, but a single goal from tournament star Ronaldo proved too good. Turkey confirmed a third-place finish after defeating the other hosts, South Korea. Turkey also achieved a third-placed finish in the European Championship of 2008, as they were knocked out in the semi-final stage by Germany. They have also qualified for the 1996, 2000, and 2016 editions of the Euros. Rustu Recber has the most appearances for Turkey with 120 caps, while Hakan Sukur is top scorer with 51 strikes. Domestically, the biggest clubs are Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas.
