About Tunisia

For a country that has not enjoyed major success as a footballing nation, Tunisia still holds a proud place in historys. They have qualified for five World Cups in 1978, 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2018. In their first outing in 1978, they claimed the honour of being the first African nation in history to win a World Cup match when they defeated Mexico 3-1 with Ali Kaabi, Nejib Ghommidh, and Mokhtar Dhouieb netting. That victory against the Mexicans is their one and only win, however. Within that tournament they also admirably held defending champions West Germany to a 0-0 draw only to fail to make it out the group, which has been the case in each of their participations in World Cup competitions. In 2004 they tasted glory for the first time in a major tournament as they lifted the Africa Cup of Nations title, which was also hosted in Tunisia. Sadok Sassi is the player with the most caps with 116 appearances, while Issam Jemaa’s 35 strikes make him the top goalscorer in the country’s history. Esperance de Tunis are the most successful club side in Tunisia.
