As Slovakia has only been a recognised national football team by FIFA since their split from Czechoslovakia in 1993, they have not had a great deal of experience in international competitions compared to other nations. Their first international match took place against the United Arab Emirates in 1994 and finished 1-0 with Vladimir Weiss scoring the historic first goal for Slovakia. The nation has qualified for one World Cup tournament since its independence, - the 2010 edition in Slovakia. It was a positive maiden adventure in the competition for the Slovaks as they defeated reigning World Cup champions, Italy, 3-2 to make it out of the group which also included Paraguay and New Zealand. In what was the greatest win in Slovakia’s short history over the Azzurri, Robert Vittek and Kamil Kopunek scored the vital goals. The team reached the group stage of the 2016 European Championship, but failed to qualify after finishing third despite an impressive 2-1 win against Russia. Vittek is also the country’s greatest goalscorer with 23 strikes, while Miroslav Karhan has the most caps with 107. Slovakia has a fierce rivalry with the Czech Republic due to the politically charged split from Czechoslovakia.
