About Paraguay

The Paraguay national football team has taken part in eight World Cups, including the inaugural tournament in 1930 in Uruguay. In 1998 they navigated a difficult group containing Spain and Paraguay to reach the knockout stages, and thanks to the heorics of Jose Luis Chilavert, came close to eliminating hosts France before a Golden Goal from Laurent Blanc proved to be their undoing. The most successful period in their history came under the tutelage of Argentine Gerardo Martino, who led the Albirroja to the quarter-final stage for the first and only time in 2010 in South Africa. They were drawn in a group alongside New Zealand, Slovakia, and Italy, and topped the standings undefeated before going on to eliminate Japan in the last 16. Unfortunately, they came up against eventual champions Spain, and were knocked out by David Villa. They failed to qualify for the two subsequent World Cups in 2014 and 2018. Paraguay have two Copa America championships to their name which they claimed in 1953 and 1979, while Martino led them to the final in 2011 when they were defeated by Uruguay. Paulo da Silva has the most caps with 148, while Former Bayern Munich and Manchester City forward Roque Santa Cruz has the most goals with 32.
