About Oman

The Oman national football team was officially founded in 1978, although there were previous incarnations in an official capacity beforehand. Prior to the 1990s they could usually be found finishing last in qualification campaigns for major tournaments. However, football in the country received an upturn in fortunes when Oman won the Asian U17 Championship in 1996 and 2000, which presented much-heralded success back home. Oman have never qualified for a World Cup tournament, but have enjoyed more success closer to home, qualifying for the Asian Cup in 2004, 2007, 2014, and 2019, although they have not made it out of the group stage as of yet. The won the Gulf Cup in 2009 and 2017. Ahmed Mubarak has made the most appearances for his nation, while Hani Al-Dhabit has scored the most goals.
