Nicolo Zaniolo has suffered a suspected second anterior cruciate ligament injury within the space of nine months.

During Italy's Nations League victory against the Netherlands, the Roma winger innocuously collided with Donny van de Beek before being forced to leave the pitch in visible discomfort.

He has only recently fully recovered from an ACL rupture to his other knee. He was expected to miss the entire second half of the Serie A season for Roma, but was able to make a return and feature in the final matches of the campaign after it was extended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Andrea Ferretti, a doctor for the Italian national side, confirmed the knee injury after the match, but the extent of the damage is not yet known.

"It looks like a major knee sprain," Ferretti told Rai Sport.

"It's difficult to draw comparisons with the other knee because that's already been operated on.

"It's a sprain of some importance. He's coming out of that long rehabilitation process for the other cruciate and he's obviously worried, as we are, too."

Although Zaniolo is yet to have scans on the injury, reports suggest that it is indeed another ACL injury would would put him out of action until the turn of the year.
