Angel Di Maria has been handed a four-match ban for spitting on Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez during the heated PSG v Marseille match from earlier this month.

And team-mate Neymar will need to wait on the fate of his racism claim against the same player after the league chose to revisit the case and all of the relevant evidence on 30 September.

Five players were sent off during a mass brawl between the sides at the Parc des Princes, including Neymar, who punched Alvaro on the back of the head and claimed to the fourth official that he had been called 'a monkey' by the defender during the contest.

French TV have provided footage of the incident as evidence in the case, but the LFP disciplinary committee has deferred its decision until next week, citing new evidence which needs to be investigated. Alvaro has continued to plead his innocence.

Di Maria meanwhile was caught on camera spitting in the direction of Alvaro in the second half, just days after returning from quarantine as he had tested positive for coronavirus.

The LFP have opted to hand the Argentine a four-match suspension, and given the covid crisis it could have been much longer.
