Chelsea punished for desire to beat Wolves

Chelsea star Ngolo Kante has said that his side’s desire to win their Premier League fixture at Wolves was their undoing in a 2-1 loss.

The Blues took a second-half lead thanks to a smart finish from Olivier Giroud, but Daniel Podence levelled matters. With play going to-and-fro, it was the hosts who pinched the victory as Neto completed a swift counterattack late on.

Kante says that the Blues’ drive to get the win left them exposed at the back and caused them to suffer a second successive loss after a reverse against Everton.

“Even if you’re not playing great, we were a goal ahead. We should have managed the game but they scored the equalising goal. We went to win the game. By trying to win the game, we conceded many counterattacks and they scored the late one,” the France midfielder explained to Amazon Prime.

“We’re all disappointed. After the last game, we wanted to win here. The first half was not so great. But we scored first, so to finish the game by losing is a big disappointment.

“Way happened today is not what we want. We need to come back and win by resting and then beating West Ham in our next game.”

Meanwhile, Neto believes that Wolves were good value for their success.

“We came to this game with joy and today we took the deserved victory,” he said.

“It was very difficult to come back from a goal down. We knew they’re a good team, but even if the game is going against us, we get together and we go as a team.

“We’re always on our game. We know we can win the game in the first minute or the last minute.

Scoring the winner was a good moment for me.”

Defeat means that Chelsea remain fifth in the standings, having missed the opportunity to go top on goal difference ahead of Tottenham and Liverpool.
