Barcelona losing battle to sign Eric Garcia before transfer deadline

The Blaugrana are keen to get a deal done with Manchester City but their low offers have made it virtually impossible to seal in time

Barcelona's low offers for Manchester City defender Eric Garcia has led to negotiations breaking down again, and it appears unlikely that a deal will now be done in time.

Barca's precarious financial situation means that they are being particularly careful for how much they offer for the defender, who initially came through at La Masia before moving to England.

An offer of £7.5m up front with add-ons taking the deal to £10m has been rejected and a second offer worth roughly the same but in a different structure was also turned down.

With the transfer window closing tomorrow, the ability to seal the deal and thrash out personal terms looks increasingly remote, with Barca not willing to offer much more to capture the central defender.

Garcia's chances of playing minutes at City this season look even more remote with the arrival of Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake, while Barca's need for defensive cover in the centre is clear, as shown by Clement Lenglet's red card against Celta last week.

But the Catalan giants just aren't in a position to make a substantial offer and as such it seems that a move for Garcia - and indeed Lyon's Memphis Depay - will have to wait for January, if at all.
