Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Sociedad that leaves their Primera Division title hopes in the balance.

A goal from Portu early in the second half gave the visiting side the edge, with Real Madrid hitting back late on through Vinicius Junior.

It means they remain six points behind leaders Atletico Madrid, while they are third in the standings after Barcelona’s latest win.

But where did it go wrong and was there any cause for optimism?

✔️ GOOD PERFORMANCE

Vinicius Junior: 7.4

Only played the last 30 minutes but changed the course of the match with his vivacity.

Often derided for his lack of end product, the attacker snatched the levelling goal towards the end with a predatory finish.

Martin Zubimendi: 7.2

Both Real Sociedad central midfielders had strong games, but it was Martin Zubimendi who emerged marginally the better statistically.

His contribution was primarily a defensive one as he posted excellent numbers in terms of his tackles, headers and, most notably, duels won.

When in possession, he was extremely secure and rarely gave Madrid the ball back. It was exactly the type of sober display that the Basque side required.

BAD PERFORMANCE

Mariano Diaz: 5.5

Rarely used this season, don’t expect to see too much more of Mariano Diaz in a Real Madrid shirt after a performance that was forgettable at best.

The whole of the attacking line was in poor form, but Mariano was comfortably the weakest contributor.

He managed only 12 touches in over an hour on the field, did not take part in a single duel and lost both headers he attempted to win. His one shot went off target.

Mariano’s save grace was that all of his seven passes found their mark.

STAR MAN

Lucas Vazquez: 8.7

Deployed at right-back, Lucas Vazquez was a shining light in the Real Madrid performance. He showed a willingness to get on the ball and an ability to push forward that saw him regularly making passes in the advanced areas of the field.

Ultimately, he grabbed the late assist for Vinicius Junior.

Defensively, he could not be faulted either. He made all three of the tackles he attempted and was successful in three of his four duels.
