Real Madrid had temporarily gone eight points clear at the top following a 4-1 win over Valencia at the Bernabeu on Saturday evening.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring for the home side in the first half from the penalty spot before a double from Vini Jr pushed them well clear. Valencia got one back through Goncalo Guedes after his penalty was stopped, but Benzema capped a memorable evening upon which he scored his 300th goal for the club by netting two minutes from the end.

Real Betis' top-four chances took a hit as they could only manage a 1-1 draw with surprise outfit Rayo Vallecano.

Sergio Canales put 10-men Betis ahead in first-half injury time but Ivan Balliu earned Rayo a point.

Atletico Madrid are in action on Sunday evening at Villarreal and a win will not only take them back into the Champions League places but also into third position.

Barcelona missed the opportunity to spring into the top four on Saturday as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Granada.

Luuk de Jong scored his second goal in as many matches for the club but Gavi was dismissed for two yellow cards and the home side found a late equaliser through Antonio Puertas.

In the other game pertinent to the European places on Saturday, Real Sociedad rediscovered some of their early season form to defeat Celta Vigo 1-0 thanks to a goal from Mikel Oyarzabal after 13 minutes. They were incredibly disciplined thereafter, not conceding a single shot on target over the course of the match.

Athletic Bilbao's own top four hopes decreased as they could only draw 0-0 at Alaves.

At the foot of the table, meanwhile, there was a first victory of the season for Levante, who defeated Mallorca 2-0. They remain rooted to the foot of the standings but this success has given them faint hope of survival.

Nineteenth-placed Cadiz lost 2-0 at Osasuna.
