Sevilla surely saw their hopes of winning La Liga go up in smoke on Monday as they suffered a 1-0 home loss to Athletic Club.

Having dominated the duration of the game, boasting nearly 75% of the ball, Sevilla were unable to profit from their control as they mustered only three shots on target over the course of the encounter.

And they would be made to pay a heavy price as Inaki Williams struck a winner for the visitors in the match’s final minute.

Sitting on 70 points, six behind leaders Atletico Madrid going into the game, it was a fixture that they really needed to win with just four matches of the campaign remaining.

The nature of the title race in Spain, though, has been unpredictable, with the leading trio of Atleti, Barcelona and Real Madrid all dropping points in at least two of their last five fixtures.

These clubs, though, made no mistake over the weekend.

Atletico were first up with a trip to Elche, which they won thanks to a Marcos Llorente goal midway through the first half, putting the pressure on the Clasico duo ahead of matches later in the weekend.

Real Madrid responded – but only just. They were being held 0-0 by Osasuna through 75 minutes only for the unlikely duo of Eder Militao and Casemiro to strike decisive blows in the closing stages.

Barcelona, too, had their difficulties in winning but came through a thriller 3-2 with Valencia. The home side took the lead through Gabriel five minutes into the second half only for Lionel Messi to score either side of an Antoine Griezmann strike to put Barca in control.

A late strike from Carlos Soler put Valencia in with a chance but Barcelona held out to maintain their title hopes.
