About Guinea

Guinea national football team played their first international fixture in May 1962 when they lost 2-1 against Togo. The following year was their first venture into Africa Cup of Nations qualification, and though they defeated Nigeria over two legs, they were kicked out of the tournament for using Guinean officials in the second match. Their best result in the AFCON came a decade later when they finished as runners-up to Morocco in 1972, with N'Jo Lea finishing as top goalscorer even as his nation lost out on the championship. They have reached the quarter-final stage in four of the tournaments, and are the hosts for the 2023 edition. They have never qualified for a World Cup competition in their history, and at least one of these failures is due to a ban on qualifying for 2002 in Japan in South Korea due to government interference in the country. Pascal Feindouno has the most caps for his nation, and has also netted the most goals.
