About Congo

The Congo national football team played their first international match in 1960 in a friendly against the Ivory Coast, with the match ending in a 4-2 loss. The team has not qualified for a World Cup tournament in their history, but came extremely close in the campaign to reach France 98. After home wins against Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Africa, they lost their final match away to the latter, which proved definitive. They have enjoyed more success on their own continent, and won the 1972 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. In the final, they defeated Mali 3-2 thanks to two strikes from Jean-Michel M'Bono and another goal from François M'Pele. Their best results since then have been two quarter-final berths in 1992 and 2015. Their highest Fifa ranking was in 2015 when they reached 42nd.
