The Cape Verde national football team is in its infancy compared to most nations as the country only became independent from Portugal in 1975, while it took another 11 years for the Cape Verdean Football Federation to be recognised by Fifa, making them eligible for tournament qualification. As of 2018 the nation has not qualified for a World Cup tournament, but have featured in two Africa Cup of Nations in 2013 and 2015. Unfortunately for Cape Verde, there is a sense of ‘what could have been?’ with regards to their football history as many natives have opted to play for other nations due to their lack of status on the world stage.
