Premier League's top seven won't play in 20/21 League Cup
The teams who finish in the top seven positions in the 2019/20 Premier League are set to miss out on the opportunity to compete in the League Cup in 2020/21, due to a calendar clash with the Champions League and Europa League.
The Premier League has only recently restarted, with teams set to play a condensed fixture list to get the season completed as quickly and as safely as possible, with European competitions set to be concluded afterwards in August.
The events of the ongoing pandemic will have consequences next year too, as due to a revised calendar from Uefa for the European competitions, those who finish in the European qualifying positions will face a fixture clash with the League Cup.
This will affect teams of lower reputation, too, however, who can usually rely on an cash injection should they land a draw with one of the elite teams in England.
Should they be financially penalised for the lack of glamour fixtures, the EFL are believed to be seeking £250m in compensation from the Premier League, according to The Times.
This comes after Uefa revealed radical new plans to finish the Champions League and Europa League campaigns this summer, in two mini tournaments set to take place in Lisbon and Frankfurt respectively, with ties being reduced to one leg.
At the moment, the teams affected by the League Cup omission would be Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Sheffield United, and Wolves, although cup and league permutations could see that change before the end of the current campaign.
